The comics of James Burns

Welcome.

Here you'll find comics and illustration projects created by James Burns, a designer and illustrator located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Detached is the very first comic I ever created.

It’s about my experience of having a detached retina, and talking about the fear of blindness, as well as the doubts and images of doom that go through one's head when one experiences this (well, in my head, anyway...).

Please note: There is now a second version of Detached, with all new drawings and some replotting. I'm still offering my older version, but this one is a much better read, in my humble opinion.

Grumbles is a comic strip that allws me to to channel my angst about what I see as the the ills of society, from my viewpoint as a, uh... grumbly sorta guy.

Detached, Version 2
Detached is about my experience as a visual artist who was suddenly confronted by the very real fear of blindness after suffering a detached retina. It’s not a medical story so much as a psychological one, involving fear, death, faith, and hope. It’s a very personal story, but one that I am uniquely qualified to tell. This is the second version of my first comic, and has been totally redrawn and structured.
Print: $6.50

A Year of Grumbles
A years worth of the "Grumbles" comic strip, as seen weekly in Atlanta's "Sunday Paper." 52 weeks of full-color comic strips, with snide commentary, and some early artwork.
Print: $14.49

Detached
Detached is the story of a 44-year-old graphic artist who was threatened with blindness, and the fear and doubts that he experienced.
Print: $7.50
